Thanks, I really appreciate all your guys' thoughts and advice. I haven't heard from the lawyers office since I filed the complaint with the BBB last year. I filed my complaint, he filed an answer, I filed my answer to him and it went unresponded to after that (despite the BBB requesting a response 3 times). The complaint was closed, in "my" favor (meaning the BBB didn't feel the matter had been resolved and his office got the BBB "strike"). But, like I said, they haven't asked me for any more money since. However, I did have to go to the ER back in February again. I was bit by a dog at work (I'm a volunteer at my local animal shelter as I got a grant to cover the cost of home-schooling for animal medicine so volunteering at my shelter helps me get hands on experience). Anyway. I got attacked by this dog back in February and had to go the ER for care. They still had me in the system from the accident and checked me in on that info. I sat in the waiting room for 4 hours before being called back to the exam room. And I sat there for 3 more hours before I left. I don't know why I wasn't seen but I really feel like they just refused to see me. So I hope I don't ever have a life or death emergency cause I don't think they'd see me.

I am so sorry you are going through this right now. I wish I could help you financially with this but unfortunetly, I'm up a creek myself.
My first suggestion is to have a DNA/Paternity test done. Do this IMMEDIATELY! If you are unsure whether or not this child is in fact your sons, you need to have it cleared up. It's highly possible you are paying for a child that is not your responsibility to be taking care of.
Second, why did you not press charges against this woman? By having sex with your minor child, the woman committed statuatory rape. If your son is medically diagnosed ADHD, Bipolar and/or suffering from depression, you can also have charged her with child abuse. You can also ask the DA to charge her with lued acts against a minor. There are a hand-full of charges you can place against her and you DON'T need an attorney for this. You need to file a police report and it will be turned over the Distract Attorney and he or she will be the prosecuting attorney in this (or these) matter(s). In this case it's HER who needs the attorney, not your son.
As for child support, your son needs to file a motion to modify child support. You will then be given a court date (in family court most likely) and you MUST SHOW UP for this and offer documentation of inability to pay (for example, bring your SSI stub and all your living expenses--even if you don't think they'd make any difference [like grocery store receipts], bring them anyway). It's a fairly self-explanatory proceedure and you won't need an attorney for this. My ex-husband managed to get his child support payment for two children dropped to $25 a MONTH and it's been that way for 2 years so don't think it's impossible.
So....my suggestions to start are to file a motion of modification for child support order, file charges with your police department against this woman and ask for a paternity test. Do this NOW!!!
THEN go to your local Department of Human Resource (Department of Child Services) and ask them for the number for legal aid. This is a FREE service for qualified individuals (and it sounds like you qualify based on your income and situation).
Do all of this and do it NOW. Though these things can take some time, try to keep your head up and be strong. Yes, your son is a victim but please remember that poor baby too. He/she has no say in what's happening and is also a victim in this situation.
I wish you all the luck in the world and I'm SOO sorry you are feeling so negative right now. HUGS to you, your son and your beautiful grandbaby!

You don't need a lawyer to press charges against someone. I'm not sure why the police department would be telling you these things because it's not true. The way it works is the crime is committed, charges are filed, THEN an attorney (or two) get involved. The attorney is the last "step" in a crime. The charges must be filed first. You can't just up and hire an attorney and expect them to be able to defend you if they don't even know what they're defending you for. A (good) attorney would expect all the police reports and whatnot up front for him to view before agreeing to take your case (it'd be silly to take a case if they know they can't win). Unfortunetly, it sounds to me like everyone you've talked to has better things to do. And that, though typical and expected in this day and age, is sad to say the least.
And as for legal aid saying they don't assist in these matters....that's even more CRAP! And I'd be more than happy to show them proof my ex-husband is being defended by legal aid. My sister, in another state, is using legal aid in her child support and custody case. And her son's father, who is also in another state, is getting assistance from legal aid for this same matter. So them saying they don't help with these cases is also CRAP.
File a motion of modification for the child support order. Go to your local child support office and ask for the paper work. You can do this yourself, it's self explanatory. But you can send me an email and I'll help you out with it too. I'm almost always online trying to do one thing or another for myself so I'll be able to get back to you as quick soon.
A few websites I have found helpful are www.findlaw.com This one will help you understand terms, processes and the like. Basically makes it so nothing can be thrown at you as a surprise. You may also consider www.legalmatch.com This will give you attorney's in your area that deal with your situation and some will offer you financial assistance and/or work pro-bono with you. www.FreeAdvice.com is a site run by attorney's to offer free or innexpensive legal advice via email. www.lawinfo.com will also offer legal advice as well as some free legal documents (these may come in handy if you choose to represent yourself in these matters). www.worldlawdirect.com has free legal advice, referrals, ask-an-attorney options and more.
You're on a merry go round Sweetheart and unfortunetly, the only person to say enough is enough is you. Just keep your head high and be persistent (even when you think it's doing no good). Trust me, it is.
I did a little research and there are quite a few free dental clinics in New Jersey. I don't know where you are exactly so I can't offer the nearest clinic. But here's a link. See if there is something close. Good luck!!!

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I wrote them another letter but they haven't responded to me yet. I did send them $20 once as a payment and it was returned to me with a note that said full payment only will be accepted. It's not going to the hospital anymore. They sent it to an attorney's office so I'm dealing with them. I tried to call the hospital to see if they had some kind of program for low income families and they said they only offer assistance if the majority of the bill was paid by an insurance company. But since I don't have insurance I'm responsible for the entire amount.
I called some debt consolidation place to see if they could help and they are discussing it now, I guess. The biggest problem was the charges. I mean, the hospital charged $45 for the work excuse they gave my husband because it was my right ankle I broke and I sure couldn't drive myself to the hospital considering I'd need my right foot to drive with!!! And then they charged me $315 for crutches (which I never even took for that exact reason-my brother had just had knee surgery a few months earlier so I knew he had crutches I could use). And I asked for an explanation of the $500 surgical supplies charge because I didn't have surgery so I didn't understand why I was being charged for that. And when I got their they gave me two Ibuprofen tabs and charged me $50 for them (500mg each and it was $25 a pill???) The hospital new upfront I didn't have insurance so I'm wondering if the charges weren't a result of that. It's not like an insurance company was going to argue the charges!!!
So anyway. I called a debt place and he said they would try to get the final payment lowered up to 80%. It's been a couple weeks yet so I don't know what's going on.
I do appreciate your thoughts though; thank you so much for taking the time out to talk to me!!!
Hi Yman! I'm sorry to hear you're having such difficulties with life right now. I've been there too so I know what you're going through and how you're feeling.
I can't help financially, I really wish I could, but there are some steps you could try.
Have you applied for government assistance? Such as food stamps or maybe even financial help? The food stamps you can read up about online, but you have to go in to apply. You might not get a lot, but you'll get something. Most states have child-care assistance too. It's usually easy to apply and you get the assistance fast.
Is there someone near you that would be willing to pick you up and drive you to work? My husband has to ride with someone who fortunetly has a really good vehicle that doesn't guzzle gas. Perhaps you could ask around?
As for child support, you can file a motion to have the amount changed. I'm not sure how it's done but I know it can be because my ex husband managed to have his $365 for two kids changed to $25 a month for the two.
As for babysitting, yeah, OUCH! Do you have any young girls in your neighborhood? A lot of times you'll find the 14 and 15 year old girls willing to babysit for next to nothing just because if they want money for summer, it's one of the only ways they'll get any.
As for an attorney, I don't know all the details so I don't want to give legal advice but you could contact Legal Aid in your area. Run a google search for "your state" legal aid. It'll give you a toll-free number. You can call an attorney and they take your case for free.
Good luck Sweety and if there's any way I can help more, please let me know!
I've never done anything like this before and I'm a little nervous but I need all the help I can get right now.
My baby got really sick a couple years and at the same time my husband got laid off from his job of 4 years due to the weather. We were already living check to check so it was only a short period of time before we ran out of money and got evicted from our home. We're a family of 5, our oldest was 5 years old at the time, and we ended up homeless for 8 months.
In that period of time of being homeless, we were in a car accident and my leg got broken. I went to the ER and was treated there and almost two months later I got the first bill. I wrote them back and explained the situation and asked if there was anything we could do to work together to pay the bill and they told me no, it had to be paid in 3 payments (which was $800 per payment) or paid in full. So I said there was nothing I could do, I don't have ANY money (which was the honest truth).
Then a few months later I got a letter from an attorney who said they were going to sue me for the money. So I called them and the lady I spoke with told me I was pathetic and if I couldn't pay the bill and new I couldn't pay it then I had no right to go to the doctor in the first place. They said they wouldn't accept any form of payments that the account had to made in full. I ended up hanging up on her and cried my eyes out.
I have sent them letters after letter stating that I have recently moved into a home and am looking for a job and as soon as I begin working I would pay them their money. This was 3 months ago and I haven't heard anything from them until today when I got another threatening letter from them saying they felt they now had no choice but to sue me for the funds and if the account wasn't paid in full in 30 days they'd take legal action.
I have no money!! It's not like I have a huge savings that I just don't want to touch, I really don't have any money. I live in a bad neighborhood, in an absolutely disgusting house (with no central heat or a/c). We burn a lot of candles cause they are cheaper than electricity. I receive food stamps and WIC and my kids are on Medicaid but this state doesn't offer any assistance for medical or bills to adults. My husband works 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and a lot of holidays and we make just enough to pay rent and what little utilities we have. We don't have a vehicle anymore because of the accident. I just don't have any money.
If they garnish my husband wages, we'll be homeless again. Like I said, he brings home just enough to pay our rent and utilities. If they take his wages we can't pay our rent or utilities anymore.
I know I owe this money, even if some of the charges are outrageously high, but I just don't have any money to pay them!!! How am I supposed to pay them if I don't have any money to give them? Can anyone help me?
